PAINTING THE SHADOW

“There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you.”
Maya Angelou

EXPRESSING OUR DEEPER SELF, VIA THE MEDIUM OF ART, CAN BE TRULY LIBERATING

I feel exploring one's shadow, as illuminated by the wisdom of Carl Jung, through art can be a spiritually enriching experience. It's like peeling back layers of the soul, using art as a divine tool. This journey connects our conscious self with its hidden aspects, fostering self-awareness and spiritual growth. Art becomes a sacred medium for self-discovery, healing, and a more authentic, spiritually attuned life.

I am a happy and positive person but difficulties and hardships in life, visit us all. Human beings are complex, as is the human experience, we don't always get to express our shadow, light or dark. I found painting this series of heads extremely cathartic. I know the work itself looks dark and painful but I found the experience of creating these heads, a joyful and exhilarating process. I felt liberated and it was a deeply healing experience.

If you would like to explore painting your shadow self then sign up for my Soul Portraits workshop at Sussex Prairie Garden this summer.
